Leatherman Multi-tools and accessories are made in the USA, and the quality is renowned across the world. Leatherman Multi Tool Comparison is simply an extension of the manufacturers providing multi-tools to Australians. All of the following tools are shipped from Australia.
A little about the Leatherman origins
Tim Leatherman and his wife Chau were on a budget trip to Europe in 1975. When they encountered numerous leaky hotel plumbing problems and roadside fixes for their sluggish Fiat. Tim recognised the need for a multipurpose tool that was based on pliers. The scout knife I was carrying served me well for everything from slicing bread to repairing the car. But I couldn’t help but wish I had a pair of pliers!”
When Tim returned to the United States, he took his “multi-tool” concept and some sketches he had made while on his trip and set to work.
The following multi-tools result from many, many years of research and development. Both in the field and on the factory floor.

Cleaning, lubrication, rust and corrosion prevention are all critical.
All Leatherman products are made entirely of high-grade stainless steel. Which is used throughout. It is not rustproof stainless steel; instead, stainless steel is corrosion-resistant. Depending on the combination of metal alloys used, stainless steel can be highly corrosion-resistant while remaining relatively soft (as in kitchen flatware). Or somewhat corrosion-resistant while remaining quite challenging (as in surgical instruments). Our products are made from the latter material, ensuring that your tool components are vital and that the knives retain their sharp cutting edges.
- Depending on what your Leatherman has been exposed to, you can choose various cleaning methods.
- WD-40, Liquid Wrench, and CRC 3-36 are examples of low viscosity oils that can be used to clean the joints because they help force out moisture that has become trapped in the joints.
-
Polish stained surfaces with a polishing cloth or a non-metallic abrasive to remove the stains (e.g. Scotchbrite pad or soft bristle brush).
- A PTFE / Teflon-based lubricant should ensure that your tool operates as smoothly as possible for pivoting or wear areas.
- It is also possible to clean your Leatherman by soaking it in a mild detergent and water solution. If debris or sticky substances have accumulated between the blades.
- Cleaning your Leatherman with turpentine or other mineral spirits will help to remove tar and other similar substances. Caution: Acetone or brake cleaners may cause damage to plastic components in your vehicle.
-
Regular cleaning, drying, and re-lubricating your Leatherman product will help prevent rust and corrosion. Corrosion can occur in the absence of regular maintenance. This is especially true if your Leatherman has been exposed to saltwater or other marine environments during its lifetime. If this is the case, thoroughly rinse it with freshwater, dry it, and lubricate it with light oil.
Sharpening of Leatherman Knives
Leatherman knife blades can be either straight or serrated. Sharpening serrated edges in the same manner as straight edges are not recommended (see note below). Leatherman products come with various knives, each requiring a different sharpening method.
The sharpening of straight-edged blades can be accomplished with any standard equipment, such as whetstones, rods, and various kits.
Leatherman’s standard sharpening angle for straight-edge blade sections is 32° (16° per side), the same as the industry standard. The serrated blade sections are sharpened to a 20-degree angle (one-sided).
The curvature of serrated blades must be maintained by using a sharpening system. That has been specifically designed to accommodate serrated edges. Only the edged side of serrated blades should be sharpened. By sharpening only the flat (back) side of the blade. You will cause the serrations to wear away, which will reduce the blade’s effectiveness.

Disassembling a Leatherman tool on your own could result in the loss of components and the loss of functionality of the tool. It may also cause your warranty protection to be null and void.
